Native Vegetation Matters

Council does not have any jurisdiction on native vegetation matters. Native vegetation and bushfire protection often have competing interests which must be carefully balanced when considering native vegetation matters. In some cases where development is involved, certain rights to clear vegetation for various reasons become available under the Native Vegetation Regulations.

Clearing native vegetation

Native vegetation in South Australia (except parts of metropolitan Adelaide) is protected. You may need to apply to clear native vegetation. This is a separate process to the Development Act approval process.

The Kangaroo Island narrowleaf mallee (eucalyptus cnerifolia) complex is a nationally recognised species under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999. Any clearance relating to this species should be confirmed/approved with the Native Vegetation Council SA.

See maps to find out where the protection under the Native Vegetation Act applies. Contact your local Natural Resources Centre if you need general information.
